I'm Tessa.
Lawyer, mother, wife, step-mom, and real estate investor on the side.
While balancing a stressful law career as a federal prosecutor, then as an in-house lawyer for a large international tech company, and then as a law partner at a criminal defense firm, I built a successful real estate portfolio on the side.
As I started to get more senior in my career, I realized in my gut that I could never build the lasting, snowballing wealth I truly dreamed of in my W-2 job. Once I became a mother, the thought of relying on a single stream of income suddenly terrified me. While I was on maternity leave, with my newborn strapped to my front, I saw the owners across the street put up a for sale sign on their bungalow, and I knew it was "the sign" that this was how I would start my real estate investing journey and accelerate my financial goals. I marched over there later that day with a realtor friend and made an offer.
When the seller accepted, I felt a tornado of fear and overwhelm, worried I had bitten off far more than I could chew. I wasn't a wealthy person ... what was I doing taking on a second property? But I was excited and determined to make it work. I educated myself relentlessly on real estate strategy and financial literacy, and I built systems that allowed me to turn that property quickly into a profitable investment.
Over the next six years, I grew that first investment into 10 properties ... a mix of long-term rentals, commercial spaces, and a short-term vacation rental.
These investments have allowed me to dream bigger and live freer ... knowing that I am no longer entirely dependent on my income from work and that I am setting myself and my family up for an abundant life and early retirement.
I set out to build the community I couldn't find for myself when I needed it. I'm still a full-time law partner, but building a real estate empire on the side and helping other busy professionals learn how to do the same is my passion.
